Kitted out with a life jacket, paddle and a large plastic tub (recommended as there's quite a bit of splashing!) we got into our canoe and were launched. There are many companies doing this along the river but chose this one as seemed very organised, good website, plus a video on the website and good communication via email. Wanted to canoe on the Dordogne just for the day and previous reviews backed up this company as #1. TOTALLY recommend this as a fun activity. We did see a couple of people manage to tip their kayak over (not sure how as they are very stable!) so do use the straps provided to secure any bags - you can hire a waterproof bucket for 2euro to pop your bags in. The river has a natural flow so it's not hard work to paddle along. At the start we had to say what time bus we wanted to come back on but we arrived in time for an earlier one & no problem to go on this. There are a few snack shacks on the river (didn't try them) or plenty of 'beaches' you can stop at to picnic. We did the 16km route from Vitrac (the main base) to Castle Baynac, it suggests this is 3 hours without stops and we did it in just over 3 hours with a couple of short stops on beaches to take photos (so allow 4hrs if wanting to stop for lunch). Everyone spoke English (once they realised how little French we spoke) and the set up is quick & straightforward to get your equipment. We booked online and requested 4 open top kayaks, when we arrived we found this is a large smooth running operation. A fabulous morning on the Dordogne with beautiful views.
